Ben holding two fabric samples against a hung sheer curtain in a customer's home

Why the samples come to you

Curtain fabric is the hardest thing in the house to choose off a screen or a shop wall.

A sheer looks one colour in your hand and another once it is hanging with daylight behind it. A warm white can turn grey across a window by late afternoon. You would not know until it was up, and by then it is made to measure and it is yours.

So the samples come to you instead. Hold a fabric up to the window it is going on. We will leave them with you for a few days if needed.

S-fold sheer curtains hanging in an even wave down a stairwell wall

S-fold curtains

S-fold is the most popular curtain we hang, and you have probably seen one without knowing the name.

S-fold curtains hang in a continuous, even wave rather than gathering into pleats at the top. The fabric runs on a track with carriers that hold each fold in shape, so the wave stays consistent whether the curtain is open or closed. Stacked back, they take up less room at the edge of the window than a pleated curtain, which matters on a sliding door where you want the glass clear.

You will also see them called S-wave or wave fold. Same thing.

They look best on high ceilings and full-height windows, where the wave runs unbroken down the full drop.

Sheer curtains across a bedroom window, light coming through

Sheer curtains for daytime privacy

Sheers let the light through and keep the room bright, while stopping people seeing in from the street during the day.

That privacy only lasts while it is lighter outside than in. Once your lights are on at night, people walking past can see straight through a sheer on its own. That is why most people run a sheer and a blockout together on the same window. See below.

Blockout curtains drawn right across a bedroom wall, wrapping the corner

Blockout curtains for bedrooms

Put these in any room where somebody has to sleep in daylight. That might be a shift worker in the middle of the day or the kids at bedtime while the summer sun is still on the window. Blockout fabric has a backing that stops the light.

They also do the night-time privacy job a sheer cannot, and they take the edge off road noise and heat coming through the glass. Media rooms are the other place they earn their keep.

A sheer curtain drawn across a bedroom window with the blockout curtain stacked back at both edges

Sheers and blockouts on the same window

Both run on a double track, so each curtain opens and closes on its own. Through the day the sheer stays closed for light and privacy. At night or whenever you want the room dark, the blockout pulls across as well.

It costs more than a single curtain, so at the quote we’ll point out which rooms need it. Bedrooms and a west-facing living room usually do.

Other curtain headings we can make up

If S-fold is not for you, we can quote any of these.

Close detail of a pinch pleat curtain heading, fabric stitched into groups at the top

Pinch pleat

Fabric gathered into stitched groups at the top, usually in twos or threes. The traditional, more formal look. Holds its shape well and suits a period home.

Close detail of a pencil pleat curtain heading, an even gather across the heading tape

Pencil pleat

A tighter, even gather across the whole heading tape. Cheaper to make than pinch pleat.

Close detail of a box pleat curtain heading, flat tailored folds sitting close to the wall

Box pleat

Flat, sharp, tailored folds. It has a structured look and sits close to the wall.

The three images above are illustrations of the heading style, not our own installs.

Not sure which you want? Normal. Show us the look you are after when we come to measure and we’ll put a name to it.

S-fold sheers on a bay window, Lake Macquarie

Floor to ceiling, wall to wall, in the light of the room they went in.

Tracks and the bits that hold it up

The track matters more than people expect. It decides how the curtain hangs and whether it still works in five years.

Ceiling-mounted curtain track

Ceiling-mounted

What S-fold curtains run on. Fitted into the ceiling rather than the wall, so the fabric runs floor to ceiling and the window looks taller than it is.

Wall-mounted curtain track

Wall-mounted

The standard option. They fit above the architrave, which makes them the right answer where a ceiling fix is not possible.

Double curtain track

Double tracks

Carry a sheer and a blockout on the same window, so each one opens and closes on its own.

Motorised curtain track

Motorised

Worth considering on anything high, wide or behind furniture. Ask us when we come out.

We fit the track as part of the job. It is not a separate trade and it is not something you need to organise yourself.

Curtains for the whole house across Lake Macquarie

Renovations, new builds, and people who have just moved in and are living behind whatever the last owner left up.

Doing the lot in one go is cheaper per window than doing it room by room over two years. It also means the fabrics match through the house. The sample range comes with us when we measure, so you can choose fabric for every room side by side. You see the whole-house total before you commit to anything.

What moves that figure most is the fabric you pick and the size and number of your windows. A house with six standard bedroom windows sits at the bottom of that range. Full-height glass across the back puts you at the top.

The measure and the quote cost nothing.

$5,000 to $10,000

Roughly what a full house of curtains costs, tracks and fitting included.

Four to five weeks from the day you accept the quote.

Choosing a fabric you will still like in five years

We’ve hung enough curtains to have opinions, and we’ll give them to you if you ask.

01

Light changes everything

North and west-facing rooms get a lot more sun, and a fabric that looks right in a south-facing bedroom can look washed out in the front room. Look at the sample in the actual room.

02

Weight changes the drape

A heavier fabric hangs in a deeper, softer wave. A light one hangs crisper and stacks smaller.

03

Wide windows need a plan for the stack

Where the curtain sits when it is open matters as much as how it looks closed, especially on a sliding door you use every day.

04

Bathrooms and kitchens are the wrong room

Usually the wrong room for curtains, and we’d rather say so than quote you for them. That is what shutters and blinds are for.

I couldn’t be happier with the service and workmanship. I initially had my roller blinds installed and was so impressed with the service that I had Ben return to install Ziptrak awnings, front security doors and sliding security doors. From start to finish, he was reliable, professional and very competitive on price. The attention to detail and quality of workmanship were fantastic, and everything was completed to a very high standard. I live in Carrington and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him to anyone looking for quality work, great service and a tradesman who genuinely takes pride in what he does. I’m extremely happy with everything he has done for my home. Highly recommended!

What are S-fold curtains?

Curtains that hang in a continuous, even wave instead of gathering into pleats at the top. They run on a track with carriers that hold each fold in shape. You will also see them called S-wave or wave fold, which are the same thing. They are the most popular curtain we fit.

What does a full house of curtains cost?

Usually between $5,000 and $10,000. The fabric you choose and the size and number of your windows move that more than anything else. The measure and quote are free.

How long do curtains take?

Four to five weeks from the day you accept the quote. They are made to measure, so the lead time is the factory rather than us. Blinds are quicker at two to three weeks if you need something sooner in the meantime.

Can I see the fabric before I decide?

Yes, and you should. The whole sample range comes to your place, and we will leave it with you for a few days so you can look at the fabric in the morning and again at four in the afternoon.

Do I need sheers, blockouts, or both?

Usually both in bedrooms and west-facing living rooms, hung together on a double track. In the other rooms a sheer on its own is normally enough. Sheers give you daytime privacy and keep the room bright. Blockouts give you darkness and night-time privacy. We'll go through it room by room when we measure.

Do you fit the tracks as well?

Yes. The track and the fitting are part of the job. It is not a separate trade and it is not something you need to organise.

What is the warranty on curtains?

Curtain fabric and the stitching are covered for three years. Tracks, rods and fittings are covered for two. Our own installation work is covered for twelve months.

Fading is not covered by the warranty, which is why we will steer you away from a fabric that will not last in a west-facing window rather than sell it to you and deal with it later.

If a track starts sticking or a hem drops once the warranty is up, ring us anyway and we'll come and have a look.

Do you do curtains for rental properties?

Yes. Agencies across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie use us, and we carry $20 million public liability. Blinds are the quicker option between tenancies at two to three weeks, so ring us if the property has a date to meet.

Do you charge for a quote?

No. There is no call-out fee and no charge for the quote, wherever you are on the list above.

Get your free measure and quote

Book a measure through the form or give us a ring. We’ll bring the sample range out and measure every window in the rooms you are doing.
